Meet expert cartoonists and authors who’ll tell you about their work and let you tell them about yours
Do you have a story to tell? Maybe have the beginnings of a comic book or graphic novel sitting in a drawer somewhere, but you don't know how to take it to the next level? Graphic Novel Day at the Houston Public Library is just for you. Jennifer Schwartz of the Houston Public Library told us that this is the first year a graphic novel (Marjane Satrapi's Persepolis) was chosen for their annual Books on the Bayou program. In addition to the usual readings and film screenings that are always part of the BOB schedule, it was decided workshops would be "an excellent opportunity for teen and adults who have graphic works in progress...to get some hand-on experience." Four critically acclaimed graphic novelists, including Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese) and Terry Moore (Strangers in Paradise), are set for a panel discussion at noon. After that, each will hold individual author talks and Q&A sessions. From there, it's two different pen-to-paper workshops. If you're a newbie to comics, don't miss Lue Yang's tips on panel size, transitions and composition And if have a graphic novel or comic book in the works, bring it in, and cartoonist/novelist Barbara Slate might just take a look at it and give you some feedback. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Library, 500 McKinney.
