You walk into the exhibition "Because We Are" and stand in awe of a seven-foot-tall sculpture of a man built from 300 empty bottles of HIV meds. Moved by the piece, you go home and...well, if you're Joe Watts, you're inspired to do a staged reading of the book When I Knew. Watts, artistic director at Theatre New West, told us he was so impressed by the exhibit, he felt a staged reading was warranted. When I Knew is a collection of stories capturing the moment men and women knew they were gay. The cast of four - three men and one woman - will bring to life the book's memorable stories amid visual art that commemorates the civil rights struggles of the LGBT community around the world. Included is this telling line by Jenny Allard, head softball coach of Harvard University: "I knew in my twenties, when I kept waking up with women." And this insight from Jeff Judd, a makeup artist: "I was lying on the floor of the living room, watching an episode of the Tarzan series. I kept sliding closer to the TV, sort of looking under it, trying to see under Tarzan's loincloth. Seven years old, go figure." 7 p.m. Station Museum of Contemporary Art, 1502 Alabama. For information, call 713-529-6900 or visit www.stationmuseum.com. Free; reservations strongly suggested.
