More About

Since 1998, Dialtone Records has been combing Texas's inner cities and country juke joints for the kind of blues most people thought died out long ago but is in fact still going strong, thanks in no small part to this dogged, dedicated Austin label. Dialtone's class of 2010 is one of its most impressive in years, and slides into the Continental Club for a Wednesday-night treat. Far from Sixth Street and the gleaming mixed-use towers of the state capital's enhanced skyline, Hosea Hargrove has been a fixture in East Austin's tarpaper clubs for decades, and his new TEX Golden Nugget is an exemplary representation of the kind of sophisticated yet down-home, Bobby Blue Bland-style balladry that is a key influence on Jimmie Vaughan. Rev. KM Williams, meanwhile, comes down from DeSoto with a Bo Diddley cigar-box guitar and When I Rise, an album that weds the Holy Word to Muddy Waters's hoochie-coochie. Rounding out the showcase is local hero Little Joe Washington, who continues to improve after his hospitalization earlier this summer and whose 2003 tour de force Houston Guitar Blues has just been reissued on vinyl. Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man's Wednesday-night Gulf Coast potpourri of conjunto, Cajun, swamp pop and country gets the night going at 8 p.m.
