The book My Dreams of Stars: from Daughter of Iran to Space Pioneer is the story of how Anousheh Ansarireached her dream of flying in space. It details how American-born Ansari spent her childhood in Iran during the Islamic Revolution and returned to America as a 16-year-old who didn't speak English. She not only learned the language, she earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from George Washington University and eventually started Telecom Technologies, Inc., which developed voice communication technologies used over the Internet. During her presentation today, which is part of the citywide Books on the Bayou celebration, Ansari will discuss her place in the history of America's space program. In addition to being the first woman and fourth private explorer to visit space, she was also the first Iranian-American, which led to officials arguing whether she would be allowed to display the flags of both countries on her spacesuit sleeve. 5:30 p.m. Jungman Neighborhood Library, 5830 Westheimer.
