Are you a lover of all things shrimp? Then head for the first Galveston Island Shrimp Festival. A hundred teams are participating in a cookoff in hopes of placing their winning gumbo on the menu of Yaga's Cafe for one year - and $1,000 in prize money. There's also gumbo tasting, a 5K run/walk benefiting the University of Texas Medical Branch, a merchant walkabout, live music, wine tastings and the Whimcycle Shrimpcycle (a bike cruise that ends in a Texans tailgating party). Organizers say that despite the Gulf oil spill, there's no reason to fear the shrimp being used by the cooks at the festival. Times vary. Friday through Sunday. For a full schedule, visit www.galveston.com/shrimpfestival. Prices vary.
Sept. 24-26, 2010
