In Ameriville, New York-based theater group Universes uses an eclectic fusion of poetry, jazz, hip-hop, politics, down-home blues and Spanish boleros to tackle poverty, racism and censorship. Performer Mildred Ruiz-Sapp says, “It’s about flipping a mirror back and forth on our nation and [the] people who are in the audience, and people saying, ‘Hold on, let’s take a better look’…It’s about having a dialogue…seeing what America has become and what it can be.” 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. DiverseWorks, 1117 East Freeway. For information, call 713-223-8346 or visit www.diverseworks.org. $10 to $20.
Sept. 30-Oct. 2, 7:30 p.m., 2010
