Echoes from Ugarit: The Oldest Music Notation in the World!

Malek Jandali captures the spirit of music more than 5,000 years old

Pianist Malek Jandali's solo concert, Echoes from Ugarit: The Oldest Music Notation in the World!, features his newest compositions. The music that inspired them was written in a form of notation that dates back to 3400 B.C. The notation system was found in an ancient city on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, which is coincidentally Jandali's ancestral homeland. Jandali is known for mixing Western music with the Arabic modes and melodies of his youth (he studied in Damascus and Moscow before coming to the United States). 8 p.m. Rice University, 6100 Main. For information, call 800-595-4849. $10 to $45.
Sat., Oct. 9, 8 p.m., 2010
