Bruce Machart: The Wake of Forgiveness

The Texas landscape reflects the harsh tone of this debut novel

Bruce Machart comes home to promote his highly anticipated debut novel, The Wake of Forgiveness. Although Machart has lived in the big city all his life, he enjoys writing about the country landscape and The Wake distinctly reflects Machart's curiosity about rural Texas. "I...began writing...this novel because I wanted to know why the landscape and the vernacular of rural South Texas trigger in me such a sense of longing," Machart says via press materials. Set at the turn of the 20th century, The Wake of Forgiveness examines the relationship between a father and his four sons. The youngest son is a gifted rider, and when the family stakes everything on his talents only to lose, they are sorely disappointed and resentful. 7 p.m. Brazos Books, 2421 Bissonnet.
