"Day of the Dead Rock Stars"

Carlos Hernandez adds a few new twists to his annual Dia de los Muertos exhibit

Artist Carlos Hernandez has a few surprises for this year's "Day of the Dead Rock Stars"art exhibit, his annual show of famous (and dead) musicians shown as traditional Día de los Muertos skeletons. The painter has added screen printing to his arsenal of tools, which allows him to layer colors in a way he previously hadn't. He also added non-rock musicians. "I know it's supposed to be Day of the Dead rock stars, but 'rock stars' is really just a catch-all for all musicians. I really like Tammy Wynette and Lightin' Hopkins - he's a legend that's been long overdue," he says.

But the addition that should most excite fans is a series depicting the trio of rockers who died in one of the industry's most famous air crashes."For the first time ever, I've got the Tres Estrellas, ... of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. People have been asking me for something like that for a while now." The three portraits will be sold as a limited-edition set. As always, Hernandez will mix elements from the musicians' lives into the portrait. The piece showing the teen-aged Valens, which Hernandez calls El Ritchie Valens, includes letters spelling out "La Bamba" painted over his teeth and the song title "Come On Let's Go" surrounding the skull. The Big Bopper's portrait includes phrases from some of his most famous tunes, including "Hello Baby" and "I know what you like."
