2010 International Quilt Festival

"The biggest insult you can give to a quilter is to say she makes blankets," says Libby Lehman, a quilting expert who will be on hand for the 2010 International Quilt Festival. While making blankets may have been the original purpose of early quilters, the craft soon grew into an art, and then into a fine art. Traditional throw-on-the-bed creations now co-exist with abstract hang-in-a-museum pieces. Besides featuring displays of quilts of every type and size, the festival brings classes, demos and vendors with the newest gadgets and supplies. According to Lehman, the event is "on every quilter's bucket list, no matter what style they do." 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. George R. Brown Convention Center, 1001 Avenida de las Americas. For information, call 713-781-6864 or visit www.quilts.com. $8 to $35.
