The Orange Show Eyeopener Tour: Galveston Restored is an island-wide ride highlighting artists who are anything but watered down. "We'll be talking about the community itself and how it survived during [Hurricane Ike]," says organizer Beverly Frannea, whose home is one of the many stops on the tour. Frannea's townhouse was built to withstand hurricane conditions, so it, and her large collection of folk art, survived. But the tour includes stops at other locations that weren't so lucky. Quilt and furniture artist Jul Kamen had more than a foot of water in her home, a converted corner store. She will talk about the damage and restoration as well as her work, which includes her recent project, "Blanketing the Neighborhood." Kamen made custom quilts as a thank-you gift for islanders who helped her through the post-Ike clean-up process. Other stops on the tour include a restored Victorian home, Mosquito Cafe (for lunch) and the Scottish Rite Masonic Cathedral, which served as a refuge for many who waited out Ike on the island. "It's such an enormous structure, and they have some fantastic architecture," says Frannea. "It's seldom open to the public." The bus, filled with snacks and libations, leaves at 10 a.m. 2402 Munger. For information, call 713-926-6368 or visit www.orangeshow.org. $55 to $75.
