Two styles of modern rock converge at Verizon Wireless Theater Sunday night as the Smashing Pumpkins' alternative-gold goes head to head with Jimmy Eat World's optimistic yet world-weary indie-pop for Buzzfestivus, 94.5 FM's annual holiday concert bash. The Pumpkins, now just Billy Corgan and some kick-ass new kids, were just in town in September and pummeled a sold-out Warehouse Live crowd with two hours of new material and classic hits from the past 20 years. It's been a hot minute since Jimmy Eat World has been around these parts — nearly two years have passed since their opening slot for the Foo Fighters at Toyota Center in early 2008. The Arizona band's new album, Invented, is their most solid effort since 2001 chart breakthrough Bleed American.
