There will be multiethnic dancers ranging in age from teens to more than 60 years old onstage during City Dance Companys Edge Dance Concert. Set to the words of Maya Angelous poem Phenomenal Womanand music by percussionist Ilya Kolozs, the works will include contemporary pointe pieces as well as urban, jazz, classical and nontraditional works. Its designed to surprise audiences, which is all part of City Dance Company Artistic Director Sherese Campbells master plan.
Theres nothing wrong with traditional performances, says Campbell, but once youve seen The Nutcracker, youve seen it. Im not saying people shouldnt see those traditional shows, but they should have a choice.
Campbell wants to keep live theater competitive with other forms of entertainment. Were trying to push the envelope, she says, because we want people to understand that going to the theater doesnt have to be stuffy. Art is not just for the elite. We think it should be open to everyone, both onstage and off. 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Rice University, 6100 Main.
