Besides the band's freewheelin' guitar lines, snide lyrics like "this beer is colder than the shoulder you would give me if I told you the truth" are one of the hallmarks of roots-rockers Scott Miller & The Commonwealth. Before Miller started up his Commonwealth gang, he was involved in the wild V-Roys — a band signed by none other than Steve Earle to his now-shuttered E-Squared Records imprint in 1996. The V-Roys folded in 1999, but not before touring and playing their guts out to exhaustion. Today, Miller's Commonwealth has six albums under its belt, including (oddly enough) two Christmas releases. The first, Christmas in the Country, included all the standard Yuletide jams like "Greensleeves" and "We Three Kings," but new holiday EP Christmas Gift gets a little more rugged thanks to John Prine's "Christmas in Prison" and Roger Miller's "Old Toy Trains."
