The Marvelous Wonderettes

Anyone who's all Christmas-ed out but still has in-laws in town and friends to make merry with will be happy to know that Stages Repertory Theatre has extended the run of its wildly popular production of Roger Bean's The Marvelous Wonderettes. This cheerful musical glazed with sinfully simple-minded fun features a four-part-harmony, all-girl singing group that performs for their senior prom in Act I and for their ten-year reunion in Act II. Tunes range from Lesley Gore's silly "It's My Party" to Aretha Franklin's sexy "Respect." All the singing's done between comedic scenes that include catfights about everything from power-grabbing to boyfriend-stealing in classic high school kid-stuff style. The costumes are fun, with those puffy crinoline gowns from the '50s and mini-skirts from the '60s. The New York Times called the show an "irresistible jukebox musical" and local critic Everett Evans said, "on a scale of 10, each of the four stars rates at least 11." (Take that, Santa!) See The Marvelous Wonderettes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through January 2. 3201 Allen Parkway. For information, call 713-527-0123 or visit www.stagestheatre.com. $21 to $47.
Wednesdays-Sundays. Starts: July 14. Continues through Jan. 2, 2010
