Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band is to vintage country-blues what Flogging Molly is to Celtic punk. The Indiana-based trio, anchored by drums, guitar and washboard, sounds like Tom Waits's Rain Dogs sifted through a Hee Haw strainer with molasses drizzled on top. The music on their five albums and one EP screams back-porch sessions with Charley Patton and Bill Monroe, but lyrically they are all about the Great Recession and getting drunk to forget that bounced rent check. The Whole Fam Damnily (2008) features songs about seeing your family on Cops and Walmart laying waste to small towns, and this summer's chilled, swilling The Wages should be on everyone's 2010 best-of list.
