Remember the Peanuts gang? Sweet Linus? Crazy Lucy? Goofy Charlie Brown? Now imagine the whole group has finally grown up into a wicked bunch of teens full of adolescent angst. That’s the premise of Bert V. Royal’s irreverent Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, based on Charles Schultz’s comic-strip world.

Each of the characters is different from the loveable kid we saw in the comics. To begin with, Snoopy’s died from rabies. Linus, who goes by Van, is now the smart stoner kid. Dusty Pigpen has morphed into a scary-mean jock. Wacky Lucy has become a pyromaniac on lithium and, even scarier, she’s actually slept with Charlie Brown. And our hero in the yellow shirt, now called CB, has actually become — yes it’s true — a popular adolescent.

Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, mounted here by Aside Productions, contains adult material — eating disorders, suicide, teen violence, drug use and sexual identity issues. The play is told in anecdotal scenes that have CB questioning whether he’s a real person or just the product of someone’s imagination.
