Belgian artist Johan Grimonprez carefully documents the output and meaning of technologies from years past in “Johan Grimonprez: It’s a Poor Sort of Memory that Only Works Backwards”at the Blaffer Art Museum. The installation is made up of a series of small screening rooms, each featuring one of Grimonprez’s video works.

The noted 1998 film dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y examines the history of plane hijackings (eerily foreshadowing 9/11) and the changes in news coverage of such events. Looking for Alfred (2005), a mockumentary, explores Alfred Hitchcock’s penchant for appearing in cameos in his own films. The film follows Grimonprez’s search for a Hitchcock doppelganger through casting calls and screen tests, after which several of the lookalikes re-enact the great director’s cameos and interviews.
Also on display is a work-in-progress: Maybe the Sky Is Really Green and We’re Just Colorblind, which is composed of found materials drawn from the Internet, cell phone videos and online television. At least someone can make our tech overload seem cultured. Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m., January 14. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays. Through April 11.
