So you think animation is for kids? Maybe, but it might be a good idea to keep the kids away from Kelly Searss The Velvet Tigress, about a woman who chops up her lover and takes him to Los Angeles inside of a trunk. The Houston filmmaker is screening The Velvet Tigress along with ten other animation pieces in Dark Frames: Animations from Devious and Daring Places, which she curated for Aurora Picture Show.

A Core Fellow at the Glassell School of Art as well as a film festival veteran whose film Jupiter Elicius is showing at Sundance this month, Sears says her work has often been screened alongside funny or cute works that didnt set the right mood for the story she was trying to tell. After arriving in Houston, she approached the Aurora Picture Show about a program featuring a different sort of animation, and an unlikely film festival was born.
Sears says the Dark Frames lineup includes puritan visions in methamphetamine addicts, a one-eyed Native American astronaut, and a film about a troubled relationship between a cat and a mouse, which is actually one of the most emotionally dark pieces in the program. All of which should make viewers forget about those cheerful, happy films that have been excluded from todays event. 7:30 p.m. Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex, 2201 Preston.
