Get swept away to the dramatic Scottish landscape in the new Houston Grand Opera production of Donizettis Lucia di Lammermoor. A story of love, power and betrayal, the opera centers on Enrico (sung by Scott Hendricks), who is ruthlessly trying to force his sister Lucia (Albina Shagimuratova) to marry a man she doesnt love. The situation is complicated by Lucias love for Edgardo (Dimitri Pittas), who has already suffered greatly at the hands of Enrico.

The Luciacreative team is impressive. Shagimuratova carries the weight of the intense story gracefully with a lyrical voice that Opera Today has called clear, full and capable of spinning line after line of legato. Tony Award-winning John Doyle directs (he directed Sweeney Todd on Broadway in 2006). Also on board is Italian conductor Antonio Fogliani, whos making his HGO debut here. 7:30 p.m. January 28, February 5, 9 and 11; 2:30 p.m. January 30. Wortham Theatre Center, 501 Texas.
