The Oak Ridge Boys took their name from a small Tennessee town best known as a base for the Manhattan Project, and evolved from a gospel quartet into a Grammy-winning pop-country sensation in the 1970s and early '80s. Listen to "Bobbie Sue," a disco-influenced honky-tonk romp complete with a vocal riff from baritone and embodiment of the mountain man aesthetic William Lee Golden. With their unabashed love of facial hair, from waist-length beards to bushy 'staches, and their cover of the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army" on 2009's The Boys Are Back, the Oak Ridge Boys are primed for a hipster-based country-gospel resurgence. But no matter how many goofy cracks can be made about them, ultimately they're a band that recorded with Johnny Cash, and counted the Eagles, Alabama and Charlie Daniels as peers. All irony aside, they've produced a catalog worth a listen, and much deeper than just "Elvira."
