Free Energy's first full-length, Stuck on Nothing, is probably the best slab of power-pop to come out in the past 12 months. The Philly-based five-piece came out of the ashes of the scuzzier Hockey Night, alumni of the defunct Lookout! Records, debuting in the summer of 2009 with a series of EPs and singles. James Murphy, the brains and brawn behind LCD Soundsystem, manned the boards on Stuck, helping the band flesh out ten blasts of Raspberries and Pavement bliss. The album's best song, "Bang Pop," would have been a chart-topper for the Bay City Rollers, and we mean that in the most congratulatory way possible. Extensive touring on the festival circuit and with bands as disparate as Mates of State and Foxy Shazam kept Free Energy on rock bloggers' minds and helped put Stuck on most year-end best-of countdowns.
