Argentina’s most well-known and influential composer of tango music, Astor Piazzolla, was also a Baroque fan. “Piazzolla was introduced to Bach at an early age while living in New York,” says Antoine Plante, artistic director for Mercury Baroque, in press materials. “Through his formal studies … he became very well acquainted with the Baroque style, and some of those compositional techniques can be heard in his tango music.” During today’s Baroque and Tango Music: A Match Made in Heavenconcert, fans will experience a heady meeting of the two styles. Pairing the sensuality of tango with the ardor of Baroque to celebrate Valentine’s Day was an easy choice, according to Plante. “There are shared elements of elegance and passion in both Baroque and tango music, and the audience loves it,” he says, adding, “Piazzolla is just a lot of fun to play.” 8 p.m. Saturday and Monday.
