On first listen, The Pretty Reckless sounds like a hard-bitten bar band fronted by a woman who has to be old enough to have roomed with Courtney Love in Seattle in the '90s. Turns out Reckless leader Taylor Momsen was born in 1993, a whole year before Hole's breakthrough album Live Through This was even released. Take an even closer look behind Momsen's quasi-lingerie stage attire and smudged mascara and you will recognize Momsen as the cute Cindy Lou Who from 2000's How the Grinch Stole Christmas and, as of late, sleazy CW teen drama Gossip Girl. At 17, her Courtney-lite vocals and onstage wardrobe, which left young boys reeling and older dudes feeling kind of dirty for staring too long, made a splash on last year's Vans Warped Tour. Commencing with the sound of Momsen lighting a smoke, Reckless's debut LP Light Me Up is ten tracks of enjoyable, slithery hard rock that, considering the pedigree, is better than it ought to be.
