Compagnie La Baraka

French-Algerian dancer and choreographer Abou Lagraa doesn’t tell stories onstage. (He considers that old-fashioned.) Instead, he uses abstract movement to tackle abstract ideas such as the soul or emotions. Lagraa studied ballet in Lyon’s National Conservatory of Dance, and though he credits his classical training for providing him key skills and knowledge, he has now largely set classical ballet aside.

Since founding Compagnie La Baraka in 1997, Lagraa has integrated modern and hip-hop styles while also drawing on his North African roots. His ensemble is as internationally diverse as his themes are universal, with dancers from Africa, South America, the United States, Asia and Europe.

Today’s performance, presented by the Society for the Performing Arts, includes Lagraa’s new work A World in Itself (Un monde en soi). The renowned Debussy Quartet accompanies the dancers, performing works by avant-garde composers Webern and Cage. 8 p.m. Wortham Center, 501 Texas. For information, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $24 to $54.
