Grab your party shoes, it’s time for Mardi Gras! Galveston. This is the 100th public celebration of the debauchery-fueled holiday on the island city, and organizers promise everything is bigger and better than ever. (The first Mardi Gras Galveston was held in 1867, but wars, hurricanes and a beleaguered economy forced a hiatus from time to time.) Today, Mardi Gras is a massive, two-week celebration during which revelers can choose their poison: There are five masked balls, 13 official balcony parties, 18 parades, 26 concerts featuring jazz, rock and salsa music, and a beachside carnival. The revelers-in-chief will, as always, be the Galveston Krewes, including Maximilian, Aquarius, Munchkins (for kids) and Barkus and Meoux (which benefit animals). Eat, drink and by all means indulge. The fun begin on February 25 with the new Salute to George Mitchell Parade, honoring the Galveston-born philanthropist responsible for renewing the Mardi Gras tradition after the most recent hiatus. The parade begins at 7 p.m. Tremont House, 2300 Ship’s Mechanic Row. Most other events are held in the Historic Strand District, Galveston. Through March 8.
