It's not easy to write a compact and adequate overview of what Diana Ross has accomplished in her run — now six decades long — as one of the reigning queens of R&B and soul. There was The Supremes, one of the most successful of the girl groups of the '60s, amassing hits and smashes like "Baby Love," "You Keep Me Hanging On" and "Stop! in the Name of Love." In 1970, Ross left for a solo career that would bring her even more accolades than she received with the Supremes. Her solo singles were a constant presence on the charts, carrying her fan base into the '70s with forward-thinking songwriting and production values. She also dipped into acting, first with the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues, the rags-to-riches drama Mahogany and her most popular role as Dorothy in the campy Wizard of Oz retelling The Wiz, opposite a young Michael Jackson as the Scarecrow. Today Ross is the grand diva of her genre, still a sought-after live act, and very much the template for Beyoncé Knowles as we know her today.
