“Anything can be used as art material,” says artist Josephine Durkin. For her exhibit “When I saw you last…” currently on display at the Lawndale Art Center, she creates sculptures by connecting desks, fans, pillows and chairs to one another. The centerpiece of her show, Filtered and Clipped (Please tell me again…), is dedicated to her father, who recently passed away. It consists of a network of desks linked together through a common web. Situated on the desks are clipboards equipped with motors and motion sensors. As the viewer walks by, the clipboards move up and down and motion sensors trigger audio clips from Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings. The music is somber and sets a reflective, grieving mood. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Through March 3. 4912 Main.
