When all the rest of the pop-metal acts in the '80s were busy getting into Aleister Crowley and lighting black candles for album covers, Stryper dared to praise the name of Jesus Christ and scream about redemption and the love of a higher, less nefarious power. Though they garnered derision from mainstream metal acts who may have looked down on looking to the heavens instead of digging on the below, the band soldiered on, making five albums until lead singer Michael Sweet went solo as a Christian pop-rock act in 1992. He even wound up fronting a new version of Boston, but by 2006, Stryper had reunited in full for older audiences thirsty again for their yellow and black attack. This year they released The Covering, a covers album seeing the band taking on some of their favorite tracks by UFO, Ozzy Osbourne and Led Zeppelin, and turning in a whip-ass version of Judas Priest's "Breaking the Law."
