Boy-girl duo The Civil Wars come to the table with not only the seal of approval from none other than country titan Taylor Swift, but also with a brand-new album, the already critically adored Barton Hollow. Young superstar Swift has been gushing about the Civils in most every recent interview, furthering Joy Williams and John Paul White's already growing momentum. The two-piece plays deeply morose, lovelorn ballads on piano and acoustic guitar — like a sort of even more depressed Lady Antebellum, but it sounds a lot better on record than that comparison would lead you to believe. YouTube is awash with live videos from the duo, featuring quietly thundering songs of loss and regret, plus a humorous rendition of Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" that pulls the song out of the pop realm and straight into quasi-bluegrass dramatics.
