Becoming Kinky

Finally, a show for Kinky Friedman fans. Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman was conceived by Ted Swindley, founding director of Stages Repertory Theatre, who created the monster hit Always, Patsy Kline and other jukebox compilation shows, like Bubba’s Revenge and Honky Tonk Angels. He may have outdone himself with Becoming Kinky. Blessed and sanctioned by Friedman, Swindley has taken various essays and comedy routines such as Strange Texas Laws and You Can Lead a Politician to Water But You Can’t Make Him Think and iconic songs such as “They Ain’t Making Jews like Jesus Anymore” and turned one of America’s most phantasmagoric minds into stagecraft. Three actors portray Friedman (because one, by himself, would probably lose his mind).

The Web site for the show advises, “Kinky Friedman does not appear in this show, but from time to time, Kinky will be in the audience.” You’ve been warned. The world premiere on March 28 benefits Frieman’s fabled Utopia Animal Rescue Ranch. 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. McGonigel’s Mucky Duck, 2425 Norfolk. For information, call 713-320-3908 or visit www.mcgonigels.com. $80 to $100.
