Set in Pittsburgh during the fall of 1977, August Wilsons Jitney is one of the formidable playwrights most loved of his ten-play Pittsburgh cycle. The body of work tells a story of African-American life through each decade of the 20th century. Jitney covers the funky world of the 70s, when the only cabs that would run in the black neighborhoods were unlicensed. The men who populate this world are filled with desire and frustration. Paul Butler owns the taxi-stand where the others congregate. Hes facing a world of trouble that includes a city that wants to pressure him out of business to make way for urban renewal and a son whos getting out of prison. And things arent much better for any of the others, either. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays. Through April 24. The Ensemble Theatre, 3535 Main. For information, call 713-520-0055 or visit www.ensemblehouston.com. $12 to $35.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: March 26. Continues through April 24, 2011
