The Grateful Dead Movie

It was 1974, and the Grateful Dead was in for a five-night stand at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom before the band took a year off from tour-ing. Singer and guitarist Jerry Garcia was directing a documentary about his band and their growing Deadhead following. It became The Grateful Dead Movie, finally released in 1977 and back in theaters today. More than a concert film, Grateful Dead captures the action on and off stage, from the fans’ and the band’s points of view. Garcia used vintage footage of the group in performance, animated scenes and interviews.
