6th Annual Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America

Don’t misconstrue the fact that four of the eight titles in Latin Wave: New Films from Latin America are the first features by the participating directors. That doesn’t mean this is amateur time. Far from it; in fact, this may be one of the strongest lineups of the annual festival yet. One of the most anticipated films is The Colors of the Mountain (Los colores de la montaña) by first-time writer/director Carlos César Arbeláz. The story of growing up in war-torn Colombia, Colors follows a group of kids as they try to hold on to their childhoods in increasingly dire circumstances. One of the boys, Manuel, hopes to become a professional soccer player and is elated when he gets a new soccer ball as a present- — until the kids accidentally kick the ball into a minefield. The children face danger at every turn as they try to reclaim their ball, while the war inches closer and closer to their village.

Another film that audiences are eagerly awaiting is The Cinema Hold Up (Asalto al cine) by Mexican director Iria Gómez Concheiro, who will be in attendance at the screening. In the film, four bored teenagers set out to rob a megaplex cinema. Gómez expertly examines Mexico’s failed society through the eyes of her young thieves. Various screening times. Through May 1.
