The DIY custom toy movement puts a more individualistic spin on playthings not really meant to be played with. In the exhibit Cast in Plastic: Art from the Designer Toy Revolution, more than 30 different artists all working in vinyl figures showcase their custom-painted creations. Companies release unpainted versions of their toys, and anyone from kids to hobbyists to established artists can create a one-of-a-kind work, says curator Marie Ung, adding that movement began in Tokyo and Hong Kong in the 90s. I wanted to bring the unbridled creativity of the scene to Houston.
Among the artists participating in the show are Daniel Anguilu, Rocketboy and Babyvtec. Noon to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays.
