“Cast in Plastic: Art from the Designer Toy Revolution"”

The DIY custom toy movement puts a more individualistic spin on playthings not really meant to be played with. In the exhibit “Cast in Plastic: Art from the Designer Toy Revolution,” more than 30 different artists — all working in vinyl figures — showcase their custom-painted creations. “Companies release unpainted versions of their toys, and anyone from kids to hobbyists to established artists can create a one-of-a-kind work,” says curator Marie Ung, adding that movement began in Tokyo and Hong Kong in the ’90s. “I wanted to bring the unbridled creativity of the scene to Houston.”
