Poetry

“What does it mean…to be writing poetry when prospects of an ongoing future seem dismal?” This is the question that award-winning director Chang-dong Lee poses in his latest film, Poetry (Shi),premiering this weekend at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Poetry, which recently took home the award for Best Screenplay at Cannes International Film Festival, focuses on Mija, a 60-year-old woman dealing with the monotonies of everyday life. When she enrolls in a poetry class, she finds a new love for words and, ultimately, her true voice. However, it is when Mija discovers that she has the beginnings of dementia that the director elegantly weaves the parallels of life and death and the complexity between poetry and the loss of meaning into this striking film. 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday; 7:30 p.m. Sunday. 1001 Bissonnet.
