Chills & Thrills Teen Book Tour

Young-adult fiction author and mermaid aficionado Tracy Deebs has organized a group of writers from Texas who focus on things that go bump in the night for the Chills & Thrills Book Tour. The authors are all part of an ever-growing writing community with an attraction to vampires, mermaids, ghosts, and other mythical characters who write for a rabid teen audience.

Sophie Jordan, one of the featured authors on the tour and a Katy resident, can remember reading Sweet Valley High books as a teen and, despite some plot differences, can see a similarity in the themes of para-normal young-adult fiction. “[These books] all share the search for self,” she says. Being an adolescent heightens the conflict the characters and readers are feeling as they enjoy more freedoms while at the same time being stifled by more rules. That conflict is reflected by Deeb, Jordan and the other authors on the tour with hard-hitting, complicated plots and three-dimensional characters. “This is the best stuff being published right now,” says Jordan.

Today’s stop at Murder by the Book will include readings and signing sessions by Deebs (Tempest Rising), Jordan (Firelight), Lara Chapman (Flawless) and Jordan Dane (In the Arms of Stone Angels). 4:30 p.m. 2342 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-524-8597 or visit www.murderbooks.com. Free.
