2011 AIA SandCastle Competition
Watch as some of the best engineers, artists, designers and architects of the Gulf Coast dig in the sand to construct what they hope will be an award-winning sandcastle in the 2011 AIA SandCastle Competition. This is one of the largest sandcastle competitions in the world, and the contenders are deadly serious. Months of preparation have gone into each design, and the teams will hit the beach, tools in hand, ready to sculpt ordinary sand into marvelous creations. The teams work for five hours, while the public can watch their progress and vote for their favorites, then take a break from the pounding, shaving and shoveling to enjoy live music or have a picnic lunch. At the end of the day, judges carefully inspect each entry, awarding top prizes in eight categories. 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. East Beach, 1923 Boddeker Road, Galveston.
