Today’s “Distinctly American: Texas Music Festival Jazz Project” showcase includes music by two jazz giants — Duke Ellington and Thad Jones. The concert features a 19-person ensemble performing highlights from the American jazz canon, both classic and contemporary. Director and trumpeter Noe Marmolejo, who is also the Director of Jazz Ensembles at the University of Houston, leads the orchestra, which includes Moores School of Music staffers Mike Wheeler (guitar) and Woody Witt (saxophone). 7:30 p.m. University of Houston, 4800 Calhoun.
