“Other Loves: Celebrating Queer Artists”

Once again, the nonprofit group Voices Breaking Boundaries has put together an excellent and diverse mix of art and entertainment focusing on a specific social concern. The Houston Institute for Culture will host “Other Loves: Celebrating Queer Artists,”VBB’s final show of its 2011 East End Live Art series. Today’s program features quite serious material such as Ragni Marea Kidvai’s film Bindiya Chamkay Gi, a documentary about the third-gender Khwaja Sirra community in Pakistan, as well as a burlesque performance by Rice University postdoctoral fellow Jennifer Tyburczy, a.k.a. Mister Overdone. La Chicana Laundry Pictures’ Stephanie Saint Sanchez will present her latest bizarro video, and artist Rob Baker’s pottery and works in clay will be on display. The artists will be in attendance for a question-and-answer session. 6 p.m. Houston Institute for Culture, 708-C Telephone Road. For information, call 713‑524-7821 or visit www.vbbarts.org. Free.
