The Houston Ballet is on fire this year, with a beautiful new home, an artistic director hand-selected to choreograph for Jacobs Pillow, and a Rudolph Nureyev Prize for New Dance. HBs latest effort, the spring mixed-repertory program Raising the Barre, will feature choreography by Jorma Elo of Finland and Christopher Bruce and Christopher Wheeldon of England. Though none of the choreographers are American, their works seem to be. "Raising the Barre is an exciting collection of works all with an American flavor, said artistic director Stanton Welch via press materials.
Elo, the resident choreographer at Boston Ballet, will unveil ONE/end/ONE, a fast-paced, contemporary work he created specifically for Houston Ballet that will have its world premiere here before traveling to the Joyce Theater in New York. Wheeldons Rush, centered around a pas de deux and set to chamber music, will be a company premiere. And Bruces Grinning in Your Face, a contemporary work, takes place in the Mid-west during the Great Depression and is set to songs from the era. 7:30 p.m. May 26. Through June 5.
