Tudor Mitroi and Dumitru Gorzo, who both grew up in Romania and now live in the U.S., reflect on their lives as spectators of cultures in their new show at Box 13, paradoxically titled Not Tourists. Gorzo paints people he has encountered throughout his world travels, and Mitroi makes contoured map-like paintings of personal and historical importance. Not Tourists is just one of four new shows at the art space that explore identity. San Antonio artist Joey Fauerso plays with the boundaries set for males and females in her show The Clearing. In a series of watercolors, she depicts male nudes with a sensuality that is usually reserved for females. Meanwhile, Houston's own Jenny Schlief challenges the perception of what it means to be a happy woman in Jenny Schlief Stock Photography: From the Woman Series. And opening night brings Houston's own Cody Ledvina in Gawd Parents: I Am Real, a live performance featuring Ledvina and a cast that includes artist Trenton Doyle Hancock. Artifacts from that performance, including the stage and the video Ledvina created for it, will be on view along with the other shows through July 23. Opening night is 7 to 9:30 p.m. June 18. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Saturdays and by appointment. 6700 Harrisburg Blvd. For information, call 713-533-8692 or visit www.box13artspace.com. Free.
