Year in and year out, the Juneteenth Celebration always draws one of Miller Outdoor Theatre's biggest crowds of the year, and it's not hard to see why. Commemorating the day the end of slavery was finally announced in Texas in June 1865, Juneteenth is one of the biggest days on the African-American calendar, official holiday or not. Sunday's lineup is something to celebrate as well, with New Orleans trombone prodigy Glen David Andrews leading the way. Andrews, who has appeared on HBO's Treme, had critics tripping over their superlatives after his performance at Jazz Fest this year: "Approximating the power released by a six-pack of hydrogen bombs detonated at tent central, carrying his audience along on a wild ride from one detonation to the next, Andrews was searingly, exhaustingly astonishing," wrote his hometown paper on nola.com. From the outskirts of Lafayette, Corey Ledet and his zydeco band are no strangers to Miller. Just two weeks ago, in fact, their performance at the Accordion Kings & Queens festival moved the Houston Press' William Michael Smith to say, "There isn't much live music more joyous than listening to and watching a locked-in Louisiana rhythm section laying down the voodoo hoodoo." You've been warned.
