If you're into instrumental rock, great washes of guitar and thrilling cymbal-heavy drum climaxes, you might as well bring a sleeping bag to the Mink Saturday. Topping the epic bill of hard prog and instro-metal are Houston/Austin warlords Co-Pilot, who drift between metallic aggression and piano-laced serenity on this year's The Course of Empire EP. Treading the same path, although perhaps without quite as much of a metal edge, is The Calm Blue Sea. Back from a hiatus that began shortly after the Austin four-piece released its six-song debut, TCBS has remastered those six songs pinned on two bonus tracks, and released its first proper LP, The Calm Blue Sea. NPR.org featured the album on its First Listen feature last week, invoking the names of instro-rock titans Explosions In the Sky, Mogwai and Godspeed You! Black Emperor: "All four acts are cut from the same quiet-loud-louder-quiet cloth. But fans of those bands should also fall in love with The Calm Blue Sea."
