It wouldn't be summertime in Texas without a visit from the Lone Star State's No. 1 psychobilly preacher, the Rev. Horton Heat. This year, the demon of Deep Ellum is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his Sub Pop debut Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em ("Psychobilly Freakout," "Eat Steak," "Marijuana"), but his most recent album is still the same as his last few trips through town, 2009's Laughin' & Cryin' With the Reverend Horton Heat (Yep Roc). So instead, this time we investigated the Corpus Christi Ray graduate's catalog to see what lurked in the darker corners – compilations, tribute albums, soundtracks and whatnot. Heat's very first appearance on record-store racks appears to be "Love Whip" and "All Walks of Life" on the 1987 comp Texas Lovers; that same year, Island Records' The Sounds of Deep Ellum included "The Devil's Chasing Me," a longtime live staple that resurfaced on his 1993 masterpiece The Full-Custom Gospel Sounds of Reverend Horton Heat and the soundtrack for 1994 indie-noir film Love & a .45. Later on came "Hello Walls" for Justice Records' Willie Nelson tribute Twisted Willie and "I Can't Surf" for Interscope's MOM: Music for Our Mother Earth, both from 1996, a one-off cover of Frank Sinatra's "It Was a Very Good Year" for Time Bomb Records in 2000 and "Get Rhythm" on 2002's Dressed In Black: A Tribute to Johnny Cash. Throw in a couple of video-game appearances (Redneck Rampage, Space Bunnies Must Die) and a Halloween Hootenanny or two, and you've got one well-rounded rockabilly. Joining Heat, bass-thumping sidekick "Nature Boy" Jimbo Wallace and drummer Paul Simmons this time around is one of the trio's favorite touring partners: Nashville Pussy, the Atlanta quartet whose blend of balls-out biker rock and tongue-in-cheek white-trash tropes has led some critics to dub them the American Motorhead. In 2009, NashPuss achieved what must have been a lifelong dream and became honorary Texans with the the release of Steamhammer LP From Hell to Texas.
