American Buffalo

We strongly suspect that playwright David Mamet has snakes in his head. That’s the only way he can concoct his complicated, surreal stories. The Landing Theatre Company is tackling Mamet’s American Buffalo, the story of four friends who conspire to steal a coin collection. Set in the junk shop that one of the men owns, American Buffalo shows the downward spiraling of the group’s members as they plot revenge and theft, first against an outsider and then against each other. There’s no one to really root for, and no one wins (a frequent Mamet device), but watching the group fall apart is mesmerizing. Preview performances 8 p.m. August 3 and 4, regular performances 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays, 8 p.m. August 15. Through August 28. O’Kane Theatre, 1 Main.
