1 p.m. Sunday, August 28, at the Continental Club, 3700 Main, 713-529-9899 or www.continentalclub.com/houston.html.
If Austin police have made any progress toward finding out how popular rockabilly musician Chadd Thomas wound up dead in a South Austin parking lot the morning of July 11, or who was responsible, they haven't yet shared that information with the public. Nevertheless, the support for Thomas's friends and survivors since his death has been overwhelming, especially online and among his fellow musicians. After several memorial concerts in Central Texas, Sunday the goodwill spreads to Houston, where Thomas and his band the Crazy Kings were one of the most popular bands of their kind before relocating to the state capital. Many of Thomas's friends and cohorts from those days will be on hand, making the memorial also one of the better local roots shows of the year, with a dash of punk rock: The Flamin' Hellcats, Los Skarnales, Johnny Falstaff, Sean Reefer & the Resin Valley Boys, Dollyrockers, Luxurious Panthers, Murder the Stout, Resurgence A.D., Roth of Exile and DJ Big E, who pulled the whole thing together. Proceeds from the door (cover is $10) will go directly to Thomas's daughter Madison Rose, who turned seven years old this month.
