Filmmaker John Turturro described his 2010 documentary Passione, set in Naples, as “a musical adventure that comes directly out of the people and the volcanic land they inhabit.” We’re not sure if “adventure” is a big enough word to convey the culture he captures. He recorded musicians and dancers at various sites throughout the city, mixing flamenco, folk and even a little bit of funk to create an exciting and exhilarating sound.

One scene shows us a band performing a unique version of “Pistol Packin’ Mama.” A singer performs the traditional vocals, complete with country twang, along with a folk singer who is shrieking and groaning and a group of musicians playing various tambourines, guitars and an accordion. The disparate styles mesh seamlessly.

Turturro has been invited to the Saturday screening, but his appearance has not been confirmed. Passione, part of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston’s MFAH Film Premieres series, makes its Houston debut this weekend with screenings at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 5 p.m. Sunday. 1001 Bissonnet.
