Seattle-based noise-pop quartet Grave Babies bury their hooks below a few feet of in-the-red synths, drums and guitars, and it works. It works like similar acts like Suicide, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Houston's own post-spaghetti-westerners Balaclavas, and even some passages from new It-band iceage. Their recordings are brutal on untrained ears, but go down like sugar to those willing to pay attention, with lush Depeche Mode and Yaz lines hidden under the rubble of tunes like the misleadingly titled "Gouge Your Eyes Out." YouTube is awash with great live clips of the band, if you can contend with bloody sound and shaky camera work, but maybe that just adds to these Babies' luster. With releases on Danish label Skrot Up and Sub Pop subsidiary Hardly Art, the band is now touring behind March's Skrot offering, DEATHFACE, which they began pushing at SXSW.
