Kid Rock's story is 100 percent "Only in America" — the party-rocking Beastie Boys/Run-DMC copycat who found his inner Seger and Skynyrd just in time to cash in on the rap-rock revolution of the late '90s and early '00s, and went on to have even greater success nearly a decade after that...on mainstream country radio. It's one of the biggest feel-good stories in all of popular music, especially if you share the Kid's proclivities for things that make you feel good: 12-packs, strippers and bitchin' tunes, no matter their genre of origin. (How is this guy not running for office yet?) The key to Kid Rock's third-act transformation was probably "Picture," his tell-it-like-it-is 2001 country duet with Sheryl Crow; to celebrate the song's tenth anniversary, he's recruited the Missouri-born ex-schoolteacher and Michael Jackson backup singer to co-headline his "Born Free" tour. He probably won't play anything off 1990 debut Grits Sandwiches for Breakfast ("Wax the Booty" is a personal favorite), but he has been opening with 2000's Metallica-jacking "American Bad Ass," which contains the memorable line "I know it stinks in here, because I'm the shit." Classic.
